Raccoons and Rabies - A Serious Issue

The incidence of reported rabies in raccoons and other wildlife has increased dramatically over the past 30 years. Raccoons have recently been identified as the major wildlife host of rabies in the United States, primarily due to increased prevalence in the eastern United States.

Vaccinate your dogs against rabies.

Please make sure all domestic animals (dogs, cats, and livestock) are currently vaccinated with a Rabies shot. If a dog has an altercation with a Raccoon and is not vaccinated, the dog would have been ordered to be confined for six months in an approved pen or facility, or humanely euthanized to protect the family members from possible exposure to the Rabies Virus. If your dog has an altercation, and is up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations they only to receive a rabies booster and a 45-day quarantine, according to Middletown, NJ Health Department Director Rich DeBenedetto. Previously, a skunk and another raccoon tested positive in December 2011.
