Pests We Treat - Hornets Nest High Up in Tree in Wall Township, NJ
I was dispatched to a home in Wall Township, NJ to treat and remove a fairly large hornets nest that had formed a few feet from the homeowner’s driveway. I was able to speak with the homeowner who had just arrived to meet me. She was able to observe the nest from her bedroom window. Coincidentally, the homeowner had an appliance delivery truck arrive at the home after I treated the nest, so agitated hornets were swarming around the driveway. I motioned to the driver to move his truck, which was parked adjacent to the swarming nest. The helper actually got out of the truck and stepped into the path of the swarming wasps. I yelled to warn him about the wasps and he just gave me a blank stare, and quickly realized that he was not English-speaking. Fortunately, the homeowner spoke Spanish and warned him about the nest. I saw that he was nervous about the situation and soon found out why — he was allergic to bee stings! Fortunately, the wasps were already slowing down from my treatment. The appliance team quickly completed the delivery without incident and left.
The treatment used to kill a hornets nest is a slow-acting non-repellent. To effectively kill the nest, you have to kill the entire colony, including the queen. With this product, all of the insects will come into contact with it as it spreads throughout the nest. Also, it is important to kill not only the insects in the nest, but also the foraging workers that are returning. We want the nest to sit for a couple of days until it becomes completely dormant and there is no more insect activity. When I returned, I was able to safely remove the nest without risk of being stung. I safely removed and packaged the nest in less than ten minutes.
