Pests We Treat - Huge Hornet Nest Outside the Home in Rumson, NJ

Here is a short video filmed in Rumson, NJ to take a look at an active wasp nest up close and personal. These particular wasps are known as baldfaced hornets, even though they are not true hornets. Rather, these long black wasps are a type of aerial yellow jacket. They are called “baldfaced” because of their white/ivory markings on their faces and abdomens. As you can see in the video, these wasps build a distinctive football shaped grey papery nest — and these nests will continue to expand as more workers are produced by the queen. The nests are made of chewed wood mixed with their saliva that acts as a binding glue.

This particular nest was attached to the branch of a fur tree. You can see the busy wasps coming in and out of the nest opening. These wasps commonly build their nests in bushes and shrubbery and the nests will be at least three feet off the ground. On occasion, the wasps will build their nests on buildings, especially under eaves along the roofline. These wasps are aggressive and territorial, so if they build a nest in close proximity to a building or where people like to congregate (like your backyard in the summer!), it’s important to have these nests removed.

With this nest, I sprayed it with a slow-acting application that will kill the nest. You want to use a product that does not repel the wasps and give them the opportunity to relocate elsewhere. The objective is to kill the entire colony and the queen. Once the application takes effect, I’ll return to remove the nest.
