Pests We Treat - Wasp removal - Wasps invade Dayton, NJ home through smallest void near pipe
Today, I was called to a home in Dayton, NJ that was having a problem with yellow jackets. During my inspection, I found their access point: These sneaky devils were entering the home through an opening for the sump pump discharge hose. As nightly temperatures start to drop, yellow jackets will look to access homes and other structures for their survival. They’ll typically find their way inside via the small openings of holes where pipes and wires are entering the structure. Once inside a wall void, they'll start building a nest for the colony to survive the cold winter months.
The best treatment method for a yellow jacket infestation is to apply a dust around the entry points of their nest. After the chemical dust is applied, the yellow jackets will begin to "clean" the area. Yellow jackets may be mean and nasty, but they are also sticklers for cleanliness. No self-respecting yellow jacket will tolerate a dirty nest. In the process of trying to remove the dust, they will be poisoned. While it's not an instant death, this treatment is most effective because the dust stays active long enough to kill the colony. It doesn't easily breakdown due to weather.
Based on my past experience, all of the yellow jackets will be dead in three days. But don’t feel sorry for them! This is one insect that deserves no pity. Yellow jackets are aggressive, hostile, territorial insects whose stings can cause severe pain and complications. Yellow jacket nests built in human habitats are dangerous and must be eliminated.
