Pests We Treat - Digger bees in action in Wall, NJ
I was dispatched to a Wall Twp, NJ residence to treat a digger bee infestation in the yard. Digger bees, also called Miner bees, build their nests in the soil, usually in bald areas of patchy, grassy areas. These bees leave mounds that look like ant hills except that the hole is larger. There's about 700 different species of digger bees, and they are important pollinator of flowers and plants, even more important than honeybees and bumblebees. These bees are also known as Miner bees because they dig tunnels to rear their young. The female digs the hole while the male stands guard and waits for the arrival of other males that attempt to take over. In nature, when a fight ensues, it is usually the larger insect that wins. Digger bees become a pest for homeowners once you have hundreds of these active bees swarming all over your property. They will pockmark your property with little mounds of dirt, and, even though these bees are not aggressive, it becomes annoying to be greeted by a swarm of buzzing bees every morning.
