Pests We Treat Photo Album: Muck in the Drain Attracts Drain Flies in Morristown, NJ
We went out on a service call for one of Cowleys commercial accounts, a convenience store in Morristown, NJ. The general manager and the employees were complaining of drain flies near the mop closet and the sink area. Drain flies are small, dark-winged, non-biting gnats that are about 1/8th inch, with short fuzzy bodies. Their wings are covered with scales so they disappear in a cloud of fine dust when swatted or mashed. They can live almost anywhere that water accumulates for a week or more.
Dirty Mops Dripping Debris
As we began our inspection, we noticed that the mops in the janitor's closet weren't hung properly and debris was seeping out of the mops into an uncovered drain. As we moved one of the mops, we were greeted by a swarm of drain flies that flew out of the drain.
Muck Filled Drain
Continuing our inspection to the garbage room, we found more drain flies coming out of the floor drain. Some of the common indoor breeding areas for drain flies include the fine slime layer that develops in sink or floor drains.
Drain Flies in the Sink Drain
We then inspected the sink area and low-and-behold, found even more drain flies. Drain flies feed off and lay their eggs in the accumulated "muck" that builds up in drains. To treat this, we scrubbed and removed all the debris and "muck" out of the drain.
Foam it Up
Next, we applied a bio-foam solution. This bio-foam solution effectively removes build-up, odors, and scum in drains to help prevent and get rid of existing drain flies and other pests. Once finished, we discussed proper sanitation methods with the general manager to prevent any future pest infestations.
