Pests We Treat Photo Album: Ants and Mice found in Manasquan, NJ home

Recently, I was sent to a home in Manasquan, NJ to resolve two different infestations for a homeowner — ants and mice. The homeowner observed ants crawling around on her kitchen countertop, and said that mice activity was sporadic. These insects and rodents typically enter homes through gaps or cracks around the foundation. This particular home had a crawl space. These often ignored below-grade are usually dark, damp, private, and humid — the perfect environment to attract pests that then find their way into the home’s living spaces. With crawl spaces, we often find not only infestation issues, but also mold problems.

At the time of the inspection, I did not observe any live ants to trail. It was likely that there was an outdoor ant nest nearby the kitchen and foraging ants were tailing inside the home. To treat the ant problem, I treated the kitchen window frame, behind the backsplash, and into the wall voids behind the cabinets and baseboards.

I also found another potential mouse entry point - there were gaps around the air conditioning lines into the home. Gaps around pipes were the sealant has degraded is a common way for pests to gain entry inside a home. Here, I sealed the gap with a chew-proof copper meshing material. I also placed rodent bait boxes in the crawl space as well as in a utility room by the kitchen.

After the interior treatment, I applied an exterior treatment around the home's foundation with a good residual product. When the foraging ants come into contact, they will carry it back to the nest where it is spread throughout, killing the queen and the rest of the colony.
