Yellow Jacket Queen Found Inside Shed in Sewaren, NJ
Challenge
This homeowner in Sewaren, NJ spotted a few yellow jackets in her shed and, since she was a Home Protection Plan customer, contacted Cowleys for help and we were sent out. We equipped our protective bee suit and inspected the shed. We did find a baseball sized yellow jacket nest, but we also found something more interesting - the yellow jacket queen! The yellow jacket queen is usually about 150% bigger than the worker yellow jackets. The queen has tiny dots flanking the black stripe and, since the queen doesn't gather pollen, their bodies are smooth (whereas workers' are hairy).
Solution
First, we injected the nest with a knockdown dusting application. After a few moments, we then injected a knockdown aerosol application into the nest. Both of these treatments will rapidly exterminate the yellow jackets. After several moments, we removed the nest, disposed of it properly, cleaned the area, and then applied a liquid residual to the interior and exterior of the shed. This residual will exterminate any yellow jackets that return to this area as well as prevent them, and any other stinging insects, from building another nest.
