Mice & Saturated Insulation in the Crawl Space in Wall Township, NJ
Challenge
A new customer in Wall Township, NJ contacted Cowleys after finding some rodent droppings near his crawl space access door. He was afraid that he might have mice and wanted Cowleys to inspect and treat. As we began inspecting the crawl space we found mice droppings along the joists and near one of the utility pipes that lead outside, confirming the owners suspicion that he indeed has a mice infestation. As we inspected the utility pipe, we noticed that there was a small opening around it. This was how the mice were entering the crawl space.
During our inspection, we noticed that all of the insulation was falling down and that it was saturated with moisture. We mentioned this to the owner and he informed us that a short while ago a pipe had burst, which flooded the entire crawl space. The pipe was repaired, but he never got a chance to replace the insulation. We mentioned that our Attic & Crawl Space Division can remove all the contaminated insulation and encapsulate his crawl space. He liked that idea and immediately called our office to set up an appointment!
Solution
In the meantime, we carefully vacuumed up all the droppings throughout the area and installed several rodent bait stations in the crawl space and around the exterior of the home. Next, we stuffed the exposed gap by the utility pipe with chew proof metal mesh and then sealed it with a waterproof, premium adhesive. We repeated this process to every single utility pipe around the home that had a gap around it. Once we were finished, we scheduled several follow up visits to monitor the infestation and replenish the bait stations as needed.
