Fruit Flies in Commercial Kitchen in Neptune, NJ
Challenge
The owner of a commercial kitchen in Neptune, NJ went into work one day and noticed that his kitchen had a fruit fly problem. He called Cowleys and I was sent out to inspect and treat.
I began inspecting underneath the kitchen equipment and noticed the area was dirty, had a large build-up of gunk and debris, and was filled with dark-eyed fruit flies. Dark-eyed fruit flies develop in decaying organic matter, such as fruit, vegetables, alcohol, and sugary drinks, and breed underneath kitchen equipment, near drains, sinks, and beverage taps.
Continuing my inspection, I found the fruit flies hovering over a dirty dishpan that was filled with rotten tomatoes and soda. Apparently, the night staff forgot to clean a pan and left it in the corner. This sent an open invitation for fruit flies to infest the kitchen.
Solution
I brought these sanitation issues to the owners' attention. He immediately spoke to his staff and they began cleaning. As the staff was cleaning, I removed any food debris in all the floor drains, scrubbed each of them out, and treated them with a liquid product that removes the bad bacteria, which is the breeding ground for the fruit flies.
Next, I treated the drain and tiles with a bio-foam solution that eliminates all fly-attracting odors. Finally, I applied a fly bait product around the area to eliminate the mature, active fruit flies.
