Wildlife Removal Photo Album: Raccoons chew their way into Windsor home
A homeowner in Windsor contacted Cowleys after hearing wildlife sounds in his attic throughout the night. Upon arrival, the homeowner told me that his neighbor had seen a raccoon coming and going from one of the static vents on the roof. Adequate roof ventilation is critical. You need it in the hot months to expel hot air from the attic and relieve strain on the air-conditioning system, and you need it during the cold months to maintain a cold roof temperature and prevent ice dams from forming. Unfortunately, however, attic vents are one of the most common ways that wildlife will use to gain access into the attic. Static vents are inexpensive and popular with roof contractors. However, to keep down costs, these vents are made with plastic or thin metal, and making them resistant to wildlife is not on the manufacturers’ list of concerns. There are many types of wildlife, especially a determined raccoon with its razor-sharp teeth and claws, that have no problem breaching these weak links in the exterior of your home.
According to this neighbor and resident raccoon expert, a particular raccoon has been terrorizing the neighborhood. Apparently, no one had been able to catch this wily raccoon, and every time it was evicted from one house and its entry point was sealed, the critter just “jumped ship,” and moved on to the next house. I knew then and there, someone had to put this cocky raccoon in its place, and it was going to be me!

Set raccoon traps in Windsor, New Jersey
Setting traps in the right location makes all the difference. All too often, those who are inexperienced in animal trapping set the traps for their convenience rather than the convenience of the animal - and the most enticing bait in the world will never overcome a poor trapping location. Homeowners mistakenly believe that once a trap is set, the nuisance wildlife will be drawn to it like a magnet.
This particular house had a steep roof pitch, and it was questionable as to what trapping set-ups would be safe and actually work. A trap must be properly stabilized and secured. A wobbly trap is an empty trap because it can easily misfire, and the last thing I want is for a trap set on a roof to become a fall hazard. Given the situation, I opted for a positive set over the static vent. A positive set is where the trap is placed in such a manner that the animal is forced into the trap. By sealing the second static vent, the raccoon was limited to only point of entry/exit - the vent with trap. Sure enough, by the next morning the raccoon was stylin' in his new room! I can't say if the critter was happy to be there, but it was best for him and the homeowner.

It's always a relief for me and the homeowner when things go this smoothly. If nothing else, wildlife is unpredictable and things don't always go according to plan. However, with this particular job, I was able to wrap things up immediately on the first site check the following day. I removed the trap, sealed the access point into the home, and best of all, safely relocated the raccoon to a location far away from any human habitats. This neighborhood will no longer by bothered by this raccoon who was becoming more accustomed to being in and around homes. This would have been an increasingly dangerous situation if not resolved.
