Gap provides easy entry to commercial facility in New Brunswick

I was called out to a warehouse in a commercial facility in New Brunswick. Employees had not yet spotted any mice scampering about, but found mouse droppings. Since mice are nocturnal and do their foraging at night, you will often find signs of mouse activity before spotting mice themselves. And mouse droppings are perhaps the most common sign of a rodent infestation. Of course, there are many other signs of rodent activity including finding shredded nesting materials or stored food in their harborage area, oil/dirt rub marks along walls, rodent track marks in dusty locations, a rotting mouse carcass that’s starting to smell, and damaged food containers, especially cereal boxes, in kitchens.

I set up bait stations and glue monitors throughout the warehouse. An important part of a rodent infestation is inspecting the structure’s perimeter for possible access points. While you must deal with the existing infestation inside the structure, it is also critically important to seal off any entry points to stop future infestations. With mice, finding these openings can be a challenge. Because of their diminutive size, mice don’t need much of a gap or crack to gain access. If a mouse is able to stick its tiny head through an opening, the rest of its body will follow. And, for a mouse, an opening the size of a dime is more than enough.

During my inspection, the back door to their warehouse space had a sizable gap underneath it. Doors often have gaps that are large enough for mice to slip through, and this is especially true with overhead doors. Overhead doors, commonly found in warehouse loading docks and in residential and commercial garages, are notorious for not fully sealing when closed. A half- or even quarter-inch gap under the door is plenty for a mouse to gain entry. I made the manager aware of this problem, and told him that I would return to install a door sweep to block this access point that rodents and insects could use to get inside the building.
