Helping an Elder Homeowner Encapsulate His Crawl Space in Colonia, NJ Helping an Elder Homeowner Encapsulate His Crawl Space in Colonia, NJ

For years this homeowner in Colonia, NJ wanted to clean up his crawl space and add more insulation to it. Unfortunately, a work related accident prevented him from doing that, so he called Crawl Space Solutions for help and we were sent out.

The first thing we did was remove all of the old, deteriorated insulation and other debris out of the crawl space and properly dispose of them. Afterward, we removed the old vapor barrier and added a drainage matting. This is a dimpled plastic mat that allows all excess moisture to work its way over to sump pump. Afterward, we added a reinforced polyethylene plastic film on top of the drainage matting. The next thing we did was seal off all the exposed vents throughout the crawl space. This will prevent any outside moisture and any pests from entering the crawl space.

Next, we installed ComfortTherm® Insulation throughout the crawl space. ComfortTherm® Insulation is poly-encapsulated and is ideal for moisture-rich crawl space environments. The insulation also helps to preserve the air quality and reduce energy costs. ComfortTherm® insulation also provides excellent temperature and noise control, and comes with a vapor-retarder for use in hot, humid climates. Lastly, to control the humidity levels in the crawl space, we installed a Sedona dehumidifier. This is a powerful, energy-efficient, commercial-grade dehumidifier that outperforms standard household dehumidifiers by as much as 10 times while using the same amount of energy to run.

This Woodbridge, NJ homeowner had a mouse infestation in her basement. We set up a baiting system, and, fortunately, there was no indication that there was still an active infestation. However, mice and other rodents are messy home intruders, and they left behind a toxic mess of fecal pellets and urine stains. We completed a thorough clean-up of the basement, sanitizing and deodorizing the area.

After completing the cleanup, we returned to remove unsightly stains left my the mice. Mice not only leave urine stains, but they also leave behind runway tracks (rub marks). Mice have poor eyesight, and they facilitate movement by hugging walls as the travel. The mice memorize these routes and rarely stray, enabling them to run rapidly along a path, even in the dark. Over time, they leave a faint, dark trail of body oil and dirt.

We also replaced a rotted piece of fascia under the rear slider that was an entry point for the mice. For long-term rodent control, it is critical to exclude them by blocking all of the known entry points.

The homeowner could not have been more pleased. She was happy to have her basement back with no more “reminders” that there once was a rodent infestation down below.

During a regular treatment service of this customers home in Colonia, NJ, we spotted the beginning of a wasp nest on the soffit, right next to the back door. As we closely inspected these stinging insects, we were able to identify them as paper wasps. Paper wasps received their name from the paper-like material out of which they make their nests. They are semi-social stinging insects that usually have brown bodies with yellow or reddish markings. A sting from a paper wasp can be extremely painful and can cause allergic reactions in some people.

For treatment, we grabbed our extendable pole, attached an aerosol product to it, and liberally treated the nest. This product rapidly neutralizes the paper wasps. Moments later, we removed the nest, disposed of it, and then applied a liquid residual application to the soffit. This will prevent the paper wasps, as well as other stinging insects, from returning to this area and build another nest.

Job Stories From Colonia, NJ
Groundhog Snacking on the Garden in Colonia, NJ

This customer in Colonia, NJ was having an issue with a groundhog devouring her garden and then harboring underneath the side of her home! So she called Little Rascals for help and we were sent out. In order to safely retrieve the groundhog, we installed a nose cone directly over the access point, attached a two-gaited heavy-duty device to it, and dug a 12 inch deep trench to install hardware cloth.

Installing the hardware cloth 12 inches deep and 12 inches out from the bottom of the home creates a sturdy "L shaped" perimeter. This will prevent groundhogs, skunks, and other nuisance wildlife from digging and nesting underneath the home. The retrieval device is called a positive set because we are positive that the groundhog will have no where to go but into our device. As a matter of fact, shortly after setting up our device, we safely retrieved the groundhog and relocated it to a new, humane environment.

We then removed our positive set, installed another portion of hardware cloth by the groundhog's burrow, and filled it in. Lastly, we closed the gap underneath the home with a sturdy 2x10 and then installed two layers of lattice.

Bed Bugs Took Over Elderly Residents Home in Colonia, NJ

We were sent out on a service to elderly community in Colonia, NJ, to treat for a bad bed bug infestation in one of the residents home. As soon as we arrived, we quickly realized that the bed bug infestation wasn't bad, it was horrible! There were bed bugs in the couch, the bed, in several of the end tables, the clothes hanging up in the closet, and even on the floors and the walls! The infestation was so bad that, with the residents permission, we had to carefully dispose of every single item and furniture that was infested!

Once that was completed, we vacuumed up all the live bed bugs and their eggs. Next, we treated every single infected area with a bio-pesticide application. This product creates a barrier that infects and exterminates the bed bugs over a short period of time. Afterward, we treated every outlet throughout the unit with a residual dusting product. This treatment will eradicate bed bugs of all life stages, sex, and feeding status within a short amount of time. Lastly, we scheduled several follow-up visits to monitor the infestation and, if needed, apply any additional treatments.

Apartment Unit Has Termites in Colonia, NJ

A property manager in Colonia, NJ called our office after one of his tenants found termite damage in his apartment. Once we arrived and started inspecting the apartment unit, we found extensive damage to the sub-flooring. For treatment, we drilled into the concrete slab and around the exterior of the apartment and injected a liquid termiticide. The termiticide binds to the treated area and creates a protective zone that the termites can't detect.

The termites will unknowingly come in contact with this treatment as they go about their normal routines, bring it back to their nest, and transfer it throughout their colony. In a short amount of time, the termites will be exterminated and the apartment will be protected from termites for many years to come.

Homeowner unsuccessfully tries DIY ant treatments- but gets more ants

I was called out to a home in Colonia today because a homeowner was horrified by the invasion of ants in her kitchen. She thought she had solved her ant problem last week with the use of over-the-counter (OTC) products.

Upon my arrival, I found ants swarmed and huddled into a few areas in her kitchen, and some trailing stragglers. I knew, right off, that this homeowner was self-treating with a DIY bait of some kind. I explained to her that bait is still bait. Even though she may have gained control of one colony with the use of bait, another colony moved right on in to continue feeding on the bait they didn't finish or she didn't remove. Most homeowners are unaware that placing a bait out for ants in conspicuous areas will only draw more ants in these areas.

As professionals, we primarily use bait as a quick start to get the ants feeding while we perform a full inspection. The bait  is then wiped away so we can apply a residual treatment to all the locations that we see ants, and all the locations that the ants will possibly travel to in order to enter the residence. I allowed these ants to continue to feed while doing my treatment, then wiped it away. I also disinfected the areas as it is still an exposed chemical.

This just reminds me yet again how many homeowners buy OTC chemicals and begin treatment without reading the label or instructions. Unfortunately, this typically makes their problem worse.
