One warm, sunny afternoon this homeowner in Neptune, NJ decided to mow his lawn. As he was doing so, he was suddenly attacked by a group of angry bald-faced hornets. He quickly ran inside and, since he was a Home Protection Plan customer, called Cowleys for help and we were sent out. After equipping our protective bee suit, we inspected the area where the owner was attacked and stumbled upon the bald-faced hornet's nest in a tree about 20 feet up in one of the branches.
Bald-faced hornets are known to be extremely aggressive. Their stings carry venom that makes the stings hurt, itch, and swell for about 24 hours. What makes them even scarier is they have smooth stingers, which means they can sting over and over again, can actually sense vibrations in the air, and remember their invader's face! We attached a knockdown dusting application to our extendable pole and then injected it into the nest. This will neutralize the bald-faced hornets quickly. We then removed the nest and the branch it was attached to, and disposed of them both properly.
We were sent out to a home in Neptune, NJ after the homeowner called us after spotting "hundreds of flying bees" in her garden. When we arrived and started inspecting the area, we identified them as digger bees. Digger bees, also called ground bees, are roughly 1/4 to 1/2 inch long and typically nest in areas of the landscape where the grass is sparse or very thin. The female digger bees "dig" nests into the ground that are about 1/2 of an inch deep. You'll realize you have a digger bee infestation when you find little mounds of soil with a pencil-sized hole in it. Digger bees are solitary bees that live one colony per hole, but there may be many holes in an area creating a digger bee community.
For treatment, we injected a residual dusting application into every single one of the digger bee mounds. Afterward, we applied some granular bait to each of the burrows. These treatments will exterminate the digger bees quickly.
Recently, we were sent out on a service call to a home in Neptune, NJ to handle an odorous house ant infestation. When we began inspection the interior of the home, we found them all over the kitchen countertop trailing from the window above the sink. When we went outside to inspect the window we discovered that they were nesting in the frame of the window sill. The reason why odorous house ants have such a funny name is because they emit a rotten coconut smell when they're startled or crushed.
We began our treatment by first placing an ant gel bait along the kitchen countertop. The odorous house ants love the taste of the gel bait! Afterward we treated the baseboards and crevices of the kitchen and the entire exterior of the property with a liquid residual. Lastly, we treated the exterior window frame (were they were nesting) with a knockdown aerosol application. This treatment will quickly exterminate the odorous house ants.
When the worker ants come in contact with the other treatments they'll return to their nest and transfer the applications throughout their colony. A short while later, the odorous house ants will be exterminated.
A new Home Protection Plan customer in Neptune, NJ, called our Pest Control Division after noticing a large number of ants in her kitchen. So we were sent out to inspect and treat. In order to find out where the ants were coming, we inspected the exterior of the home. Sure enough, we found several trails of ants crawling along the side of the building and infesting the home by getting underneath the siding.
Since the ants were coming from the mulch bed, we treated that area, as well as the entire landscape, with a granular bait. Afterward, we treated the entire exterior perimeter of the building and, with the owners permission, the cracks, crevices, and baseboards of the kitchen with a liquid non-repellent. Once the ants come in contact with either of these products they'll return to their nest and transfer the treatments to their queen and the other ants in the colony.
A short while later, the ants will be exterminated.
As we were treating this commercial property in Neptune, NJ, we found a massive infestation of ants near the back entrance. There were thousands of them trailing along the area. For treatment, we applied a liquid residual to the area, as well as around the exterior of the building. Afterward, we treated the grassy areas with a granular bait. Both of these applications aren’t going to eliminate the ants immediately, but allow the worker ants to return to their nest and then transfer the treatments to the other ants in their colony and their queen. In a short amount of time, the ant colony will be exterminated.
A homeowner in Neptune, NJ wanted to spruce up her yard and put down new mulch around her entire property. After only two days of putting down the mulch, her kitchen was infested with ants! Although mulch provides a number of benefits for your yard, it also provides the perfect living conditions for ants and other pests. Mulch holds moisture (which attracts ants), protects insects from the sun and predators, and is a food source for different types of ants.
After thoroughly inspecting the interior of the house I found pavement ants trailing from a kitchen window to a cabinet. Pavement ants received their clever name from nesting in pavements, driveways, and sidewalks. They are darkish brown to black in color and are approximately a 1/8 of an inch in size. Although pavement ants aren't a health risk, once they make their way inside a home, they can contaminate food.
As I followed the ant trail to the exterior side of the kitchen window I came across in six different ant trails coming from the mulch up to the house shingles. The ants were able to gain access into the home from underneath the siding and the kitchen window.
I treated all the cracks and crevices in the kitchen and bathroom with a liquid non-repellent and then treated the baseboards in the kitchen, bathroom and the surrounding rooms with an ant gel bait. Next, I treated the entire exterior of the home with the liquid non-repellent. The gel bait and the liquid application isn’t meant to immediately eliminate the ants. What happens is when an ant comes in contact with either of these treatments they will carry it back to the colony and share it with the other ants, including the queen. Eventually, the ants are eliminated. I scheduled a follow-up inspection to make sure that the home is ant free and, if necessary, apply additional treatment methods.
Recently, I went on a routine pest service call for one of our commercial accounts, an apartment complex in Neptune, NJ. As I was inspecting all the common areas, I noticed a few ants on glue boards that I installed in the boiler room on my previous visit to monitor possible crawling insects invaders. I continued to inspect this area very careful and sure enough, I found pavement ants in a crack in the wall.
Pavement ants are one of the most common home-infesting ants. They are approximately 1/8 of an inch long, dark brown to black, and nest under sidewalks, driveways, and concrete slabs. They are far from picky eaters as they will eat anything deem fruits and grease to other dead insects. Pavement ants feed on almost anything from sugar, fruits, small seeds, and grease.
For treatment, I applied a liquid residual application along the cracks and crevices in the basement. This application is a non-repellent and is undetectable to the ants. They will carry this application to their colony where they will groom one another. In a short amount of time, the ants are eliminated. I informed the property manager who will hire a contractor team to fix the cracks in the pavement.
Recently, I performed a home protection plan (HPP) servicing for a residential customer in Neptune, NJ. As sometimes happens, the homeowner was not there when I arrived. I contacted the customer by phone to let him know I was there and if there were any pest issues I should be aware of. She told me that she had seen some ants crawling around on her back deck. Spotting foraging ants outside your home is an all-too-common occurrence this time of year. Also, it’s far better to deal with these pests before they find entry points to gain access inside your home.
During further inspection of the deck, I moved a storage box and, bingo, I found ants nesting underneath. I treated the deck area, both underneath and on top, with an effective residual product. This treatment will soon resolve this outdoor ant infestation. These periodic HPP visits allow us to deal with pest infestations in their early stages, helping homeowners avoid more serious, entrenched infestations. It’s far easier for us to deal with pests outside of the home before they find their way inside.
The customer was seeing hundreds of "flying ants" in her bathroom. Soon as I walked in the bathroom, I realized she was having a termite swarm.
I then went into her crawlspace to locate the source of the swarm. Directly under the bathroom was the Termite mud tube the swarmers were emerging from.
Cowleys will treat the entire perimeter of the home by trenching and soil rodding Termidor termiticide into the soil around the house, and also drilling the block under the bathroom in the crawlspace.
