Protect your Pets from Summer Pests
Neptune City, NJ (April 28, 2016) – May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month. It’s a great time to remind everyone to be vigilant about ticks now that the longer days of spring and summer are approaching, and we are spending more time outdoors. It’s also important to remember our beloved pets. Because of their natural behaviors like sniffing around in high brush, pets are also exposed to disease-carrying ticks, even more so than their owners. Just like people, they can contract Lyme. And ticks are not the only biting pests to worry about. Mosquitoes can transmit heartworm and fleas can transmit flea allergy dermatitis, anemia, and even tapeworms. Now that we are entering tick, mosquito, and flea season, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) and Cowleys Pest Services are reminding pet owners to take extra precautions for their furry friends.
“Pet owners can go a long way to ensure pet safety,” said Bill Cowley, Co-owner of Cowleys Pest Services. “There are easy ways to help your pets avoid these pesky critters and their diseases. Simple steps like walking pets on shorter grass trails and maintaining proper pet hygiene will help keep owners and their four-legged family members from missing out on any fun over the spring and summer.”
To help shield pets from these biting pests and reduce the chance of bringing them into your home, Cowleys recommends that pet owners follow these NPMA tips:
- Check pets daily for ticks. Be aware of excessive scratching and licking.
- Use a flea and tick preventative medication as directed.
- Avoid walking dogs in tall grass where fleas and ticks often hide.
- Bathe pets after walks or playtime with other animals.
- Frequently wash pet bedding, collars, and plush toys.
- Wash bed linens and vacuum carpets, floors and furniture frequently.
- Consider a tick and mosquito treatment program for your property.
