Photo Album: Looking for Mice and Found a Black Widow in Sea Girt, NJ
Opened the Bait Station and...
We returned to this property to check on the rodent activity in our rodent bait stations. As we opened this bait station, we were greeted by a black widow spider!
Deadly Yet Pretty
Female black widows are shiny black, with a red-orange hourglass pattern on their abdomen. Black widows use a silk-like substance to weave tangled-looking webs, typically close to the ground in covered or dark places, such as near drain pipes or under logs.
The Upside Down
The female black widow spider hangs upside down in the web to await her prey, exposing her bright markings as a warning to potential predators. Their venom is reported to be 15 times stronger than that of a rattlesnake! Fortunately, they only bite humans when they are disturbed.
Exterminating the Black Widow Spider
We applied a knockdown liquid application directly to the black widow spider as well as performed a crack and crevice treatment around the entire exterior of the building with a residual application that is specifically labeled to eliminate spiders. Lastly, we replenished the bait in all the rodent bait stations.
