Photo Album: Squirrels Enter Home Through Builders Gap in Morganville, NJ
Getting In Via the Builder's Gap
After inspecting the entire property, we discovered that the squirrels were able to infest the home via the builder's gap.
The Builder's Gap
A "builder's gap" is a gap between the fascia board and roof decking. It's caused when roof decking is stopped too short and isn't flush with the fascia. It's meant to help with airflow to the attic, but is an open door for nuisance wildlife and pests to enter your home and cause some serious damages.
Setting Up
We installed a positive set, temporarily enclosed the area off with hardware cloth, and set up several baited devices nearby. A positive set is comprised of a nose cone that is attached to a two-gaited, heavy-duty device. The nose cone will safely guide the squirrels into the device. It's called a positive set, because we are positive that the squirrels will enter the device. A short while later, we retrieved the squirrels and relocated them to a humane and safe environment.
Exclude the Builder's Gap
We then removed our retrieval devices, disinfected the area, and installed trim coil over the entire length of the builder's gap to prevent any future infestations from squirrels or any other nuisance wildlife.
