Photo Album: Digger Bees Starting Early in Peapack, NJ
Looks like digger bees are beginning to emerge on this property in Peapack, NJ.
Digger Bee Mounds
As we were examining the property, we found multiple digger bee mounds across the yard.
All About Digger Bees
Digger bees are solitary, non-social wasps and each hole is a separate, independent nest of digger bees. The females dig these half-inch to one-inch deep burrows to nest and raise young. A key indication of a digger bee infestation is the multiple pencil-sized dirt mounds across a lawn.
Not Aggressive
Although the venom from a digger bee sting is strong enough to cause a severe allergic reaction in some people, they're non-aggressive and usually only sting if they are being stepped on. In fact, a sting from a digger bee is a lot less painful than the sting of a yellow jacket!
Eliminating the Digger Bees
We're going to apply a granular bait across the yard and then soak every single digger bee mound with a liquid residual. Both of these treatments will rapidly exterminate the digger bees.
