Photo Album: Fruit Flies Festering in Dumpster in Mantoloking, NJ
While performing an inspection at the rear of a local restaurant in Mantoloking, NJ, we noticed a large number of fruit flies around the dumpster.
It's All in the Sauce
Upon further investigation, we discovered the source to be unrinsed tomato cans and liquor bottles in the recycling cans. Fruit flies are attracted to organic matter especially sugars that can be found in many of our foods.
Control is Imperative
The fruit flies were attracted to the sugars from the tomato sauce residue left in the cans. Since these recycling cans were located within close proximity to the kitchen door, it was imperative to remove this infestation before it gets out of hand.
First Step
First, we instructed the staff that the cans and bottles need to be rinsed before discarding them in the recycling bins. Also, that all the bins need to be cleaned out thoroughly and then periodically. This will eliminate the source of the infestation.
Just in Time
Fortunately, that day was recycling day, and the bins were emptied and then cleaned out by the staff. Afterward, we applied an aerosol application in and around the bins to eliminate any remaining fruit flies.
We Will Follow Up
Lastly, we scheduled a follow-up visit to monitor the infestation and apply any additional treatments if needed.
