Photo Album: Wet Floor Causes Drain Flies in Somerville, NJ
This business owner had a leak in one of his pipes. Although no structural damage occurred, this caused a severe drain fly infestation.
Drain Flies in the Water
The owner showed me where the issue was in the kitchen and that's where I found a plethora of drain flies harboring underneath the leaky sink.
What Attracts Drain Flies
Drain flies enjoy stagnant water that collects even small amounts of bacteria and sewage and can lay eggs in the film that forms on the inside of pipes and drains when water pools and collects sewage.
More By a Floor Drain
Continuing my inspection, I noticed more drain flies hovering near a floor drain that had a buildup of discarded food and liquids in it.
Mop, Scrub, and Treat
I advised the owner to mop up the area first before I begin treating. Once he finished, I scrubbed all the gunk out of the drains in the sink room and then treated the drains with a liquid application, which will remove the bad bacteria that the drain flies breed in.
Foamed and Cleaned
Next, I applied a bio-foam solution that removes the build-up of odors and scum in the drains. This application not only eliminates any remaining drain flies but prevents future intrusions from drain flies and other pests. Before I left, I spoke to the owner and offered a few simple sanitation procedures that'll prevent drain flies and other troublesome pests from infesting his business.
