Photo Album: Improper Diagnosis of Carpet Beetles in Toms River, NJ
A homeowner in Toms River, NJ thought she had bed bugs on the floor underneath her bed. Turns out, it was something else.
Not Bed Bugs
When I arrived, the homeowner immediately led me to where the activity was found. As I lifted the boxspring and set it up in its side I immediately saw the skins in question and realized that they were NOT bed bugs. They were carpet beetles.
It was Carpet Beetles
I inspected the entire home from top to bottom and, sure enough, found no sign of bed bugs. What we are dealing with is carpet beetles. They shed their skins in the same way as bed bugs do, but aren't at all like them!
Info on Carpet Beetles
Carpet beetle larvae feed on animal-based materials such as wool, felt, fur, silk, feathers and leather. Commonly attacked items include sweaters, scarves, coats, blankets, rugs, down pillows and comforters, upholstery, and toys. Edges and undersides of rugs and carpets are more likely to be infested than areas out in the open.
Homeowner Was Relieved
I informed the homeowner of my findings and she was relieved that it wasn't bed bugs! She immediately signed up for one of our Home Protection Plans!
Treatment for Carpet Beetles
I treated every crack and crevice as well as the main harborage areas with a residual application that will rapidly eliminate the carpet beetles.
