Photo Album: Rice Weevils on the Top Shelf in Asbury Park, NJ
A concerned homeowner in Asbury Park, NJ called our office and finding "little brown bugs" in her cabinet.
What's That in the Pantry
I began inspecting the cabinets and discovered that these "little brown bugs," were actually rice weevils and they infested the entire pantry.
Eat More Than Just Rice
Rice weevils are small insects, about 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch long. Don't let the name fool you, rice weevils eat more than just rice! They will eat all types seeds, dried beans, nuts, cereal, and other grain products. They'll also feed on cotton fabric found in furniture and clothing.
The Main Source
After a thorough inspection I found the main source of the infestation in a box of old cereal and in a bag of rice. Unfortunately, at this point, the rice weevils were all over the baseboards and cabinets throughout the kitchen.
Let's Get Rid of Them
I removed infested items and disposed of them properly. Afterward, I treated all the cracks, baseboards, and crevices with an aerosol residual to flush and eliminate any rice weevils out of hiding and then treated the infested areas, and the exterior, with a liquid residual. I'll schedule a few follow-up visits to monitor the infestation and apply any additional treatments if needed.
