I was sent out on a service call to a new Home Protection Plan customer in Howell, New Jersey to treat for ants that were invading the living space.
From First Floor to the Second
When I arrived, the homeowner explained to me that the ants were seen mostly around the entranceway and were even seen going up the stairs to the second floor. While inspecting, I found one of their trails and identified them as crazy ants.
Entomology of Crazy Ants
Also called raspberry ants, crazy ants are about an 1/8 of an inch long, are reddish-brown in color, and typically nest outside in crevices that have plenty of moisture. They'll invade the inside of homes in search of meats and sweets. They are called crazy ants because they move in a zig-zag pattern as apposed to a straight line like other ants.
A Little Snack in the Drawer
As I followed another one of their trails, I noticed that they were going in and out of a drawer in the living room. I opened it up and found a large amount of crazy ants snacking on a piece of open candy in the drawer.
Let's Get to Treating
I treated all the interior baseboards in the living room, the two adjacent rooms, and all the rooms on the second floor with a non-repellant product. I also applied another non-repellent product around the doors, windows, and along the exterior foundation.
They Do it to Themselves
The crazy ants unknowingly come in contact with these products and transfer them among their nest. Soon, the entire ant colony is exterminated.
