Recently, I was sent out on a service call for a resident in Ocean Township, NJ who was having an issue with bees.
Moving Furniture and Found This
As this homeowner was moving her outdoor furniture near the pool area, she stumbled upon this bee nest. She was terrified they may be yellow jackets, so she called our office for help.
Turns Out, They Were
After a close inspection, I realized that these weren't yellow jackets, but bumble bees.
How to Tell the Difference
Bumble bees are large, fuzzy insects with short, stubby wings and are black in color with yellow markings. They can sting and should be avoided.
Beneficial Bees
Bumble bees are considered beneficial insects because they pollinate the flowers of many plant species. Only if their nest is located in or close to an occupied structure or recreational area is control needed. In this case, the nest was not.
Called the BeeKeeper
I contacted the local beekeeper who will come out and properly remove the bumble bee nest to a safe location.
