Photo Album: Carpenter Ants and Citronella Ants in East Windsor, NJ
While inspecting a home in East Windsor, NJ I discovered two large infestations of citronella ants and carpenter ants.
Carpenter Ants in the Grass
As I was inspecting the exterior, I found a rather large amount of carpenter ants in the grass.
Coming from the Tree
I followed their trail and located the main colony in a cavity in one of the trees in the backyard. Carpenter ants are wood destroying pests that build nests inside of wood. They prefer dead or damp wood.
Found Another Pest
As I continued my inspection I came across another interesting discovery - citronella ants in the mulch bed!
All About Citronella Ants
Citronella ants are small, yellow ants that nest and build colonies near areas of high moisture, such as logs, rocks, behind bathtub walls, and even in damp crawl spaces. They are approximately 4 mm in size while queens are about 8mm and emit a very strong citronella smell when crushed.
Followed Their Trail
I followed the citronella ant trail all the way from the side of the house to the laundry room in the basement.
Exterminating the Ants
I applied a granular bait along the mulch bed, the base of all the trees in the front and backyard, and along the lawn. I then treated the exterior perimeter and the entire basement with a liquid non-repellant.
Exterminates Both the Carpenter & Citronella Ants
Once the carpenter ants and the citronella ants come in contact with any of these products, they'll bring it back to their nest and transfer it among the entire colony. In no time at all, both the carpenter and citronella ants are exterminated.
