Photo Album: Drain Flies, Fruit Flies, Oh My in Red Bank, NJ
As I was treating a commercial kitchen in Red Bank, NJ I stumbled upon a rather large drain and fruit fly infestation.
Fruit Flies on the Rack
As I was treating the kitchen, I noticed a rather large gathering of fruit flies near one of the racks. A majority of the time, fruit flies will hover around the main infestation area.
Full of Grease and Sticky
Turns out that the area wasn't cleaned properly and there was a buildup of sticky liquids caked onto the rack, which attracted the fruit flies to the area.
Noticed Another Pest
As I continued inspecting, I noticed more flies in another area and, after a closer inspection, I identified them as drain flies.
Dirty Drain Nearby
There was a floor drain nearby that was filled with liquid debris and discarded food. These are all attractants to drain flies.
Water and Food on the Floor
There was also a buildup of moisture and grease underneath the kitchen equipment.
Told Management
I spoke to the managers on duty, told them what I found, and suggested implementing a new cleaning and sanitizing protocol. They agreed and immediately began removing the equipment and cleaning the entire kitchen.
I Went to Work
As they went to work, I scrubbed out all the drains in the area and treated them with a liquid product that removes the bad bacteria, which is the breeding ground for the fruit and drain flies.
Continued Treating
Next, I treated the drains with a bio-foam solution that eliminates all fly-attracting odors. Lastly, I applied a fly bait product around the area to eliminate the active fruit and drain flies.
