Hanging in the Overhang
As I was inspecting, I noticed a trail of ants crawling up to the overhang on the porch. I took a closer look and found a colony of carpenter ants inside.
How to Identify Carpenter Ants
Carpenter ants can be anywhere from ½" to ⅝" long and usually black in color (sometimes red or brown). They are attracted to moisture damaged or fungal damaged wood. Carpenter ants do not eat wood, they only tunnel and chew through wood to create nests.
Time to Dust Them Out
I noticed there was a possible moisture problem in the overhang and I informed the homeowner. He told me he will take care of it soon. In the meantime, I injected a residual dusting application into the overhang.
Colony is Neutralized
Once the ants come in contact with the treatment, they'll bring it back to their colony and transfer among one another (including their queen). Soon the entire colony is eliminated.
