Photo Album: Potential Entry Points for Mice in Spring Lake, NJ
During a routine service for one of our clients in Spring Lake, NJ, I came across several potential entry points for mice.
One Opening
As I inspected the property, I came across this opening where the gas utility line entered the foundation into the crawl space. This opening is the perfect size for mice to enter.
Second Opening
Continuing my inspection, I found another opening. Mice only need an opening the size of a pencil to enter your home. Once they do they chew on wires (creating a fire hazard) and urinate and defecate all over, spreading a plethora of airborne diseases.
Stuff 'Em & Seal 'Em
I placed copper mesh inside each opening. Mice HATE the taste and smell of copper and cannot gnaw through it. After stuffing the entry points, I sealed them up with a weather-resistant, premium adhesive/sealant that'll prevent mice as well as any pests from entering the home.
The Biggest Issue
The biggest issue was the crawl space entrance was not sealed properly, creating a huge opportunity for mice to continue entering the home. Although I discussed several treatment options with the homeowner, he decided that he will install a crawl space door himself in the future, just not now. Until the crawl space door is properly sealed further treatment will be necessary. I also installed several ready-to-use rodent bait stations around the exterior and throughout the crawl space as well.
