Many commercial restaurant establishments often have issues with drain flies. The reasons for this is due to the fact that the staff will forget to sanitize the drains on a regular basis, which was exactly the case for this restaurant in Englishtown, NJ
Flying Around the Dishes
Beginning my inspection I noticed a few drain flies hovering around the sink area. When I examined, I noticed that there were several dirty, broken dishes in the trash receptacle.
This is How You Get Pests!
I examined the floor drain and found a colony of drain flies and their larva inside. Not implementing or following a cleaning procedure on a regular basis will lead to severe muck and debris in drains, which creates the perfect habitat for drains flies. Drain flies are not known to transmit any diseases to humans, however, they can trigger bronchial asthma in susceptible individuals and their larvae can cause myiasis, a parasitic infestation in which the larvae grow inside human tissue.
Scrub Their Home Away
Before applying any type of solution, I needed to remove the gunk in the drain first. For any application to be effective, the gunk has to be cleaned out. I used a heavy-duty brush to thoroughly scrub the floor drains.
A Liquid Application
After thoroughly scrubbing the drain and removing all the gunk, I applied a liquid application that removes the bad bacteria from the drain. Bad bacteria is the foundation for a drain fly's breeding ground and by eliminating the bad bacteria and you'll eliminate the drain fly's breeding habitat.
Good As New
Finally, I applied a bio-foam solution that removes the organic build-up, odors, and scum in the drain. I repeated all these steps to every drain in the throughout the kitchen, garbage, and sink area to guarantee that every effective measure to remove the drain flies has been taken. The owner assured me that he will follow through with his staff to make sure all the drains are cleaned on a regular basis to ensure that this infestation doesn't happen again.
