A homeowner in Tinton Falls, NJ discovered a tiny burrow near his aboveground pool. Unsure what it was he called Cowleys for help.
Warning From the Dog
When I arrived the homeowner informed me that he noticed his daughter's dog sniffing around and digging around an area under his deck to his aboveground pool. I inspected and came across a small burrow. I determined that this was a skunks burrow.
How Did I Know?
I noticed that the homeowner has numerous plants and flowers around the yard. Groundhogs are vegetarians and if this was a groundhog burrow, the flowers and tomato plants would have been damaged by the groundhog. Especially this time of year when groundhogs are fattening up for hibernation. That's how I determined it was a skunks burrow.
Postive Setting
Also, the burrow was about 8 inches in diameter and had a strong aroma emitting from it. I set up a positive set over the burrow hole and placed several baited traps next to the pool.
Success!
To trick the skunks, I placed dirt all over the bottom of each device. A short time later, the skunk was successfully caught in our trap. We then carefully removed and relocated the skunk to a new location and then filled up the burrow.
