Photo Album: Awning Protects Bald-Faced Hornets in Matawan, NJ
A client in Matawan, NJ called Cowleys after finding a giant hornets nest underneath the awning on her deck.
Easy to Find
It wasn't hard to find this nest! We took a closer look and found bald-faced hornet's in inside.
Facts About Bald-Faced Hornets
Bald-faced hornets are closely related to yellow jackets and aren't a true hornet. They are very territorial of their nests and can be aggressive if they sense intruders nearby.
How They Make Their Nest
At first, the nest is about two inches in diameter, with a single comb and containing about a dozen cells. The queen lays an egg in each cell. Once the larvae matures, they chew a hole in the cover and emerge to help build the nest. By the time the first two or three worker hornets emerge, the comb has about 40 cells.
Treatment Time
We used an extendable pole to treat the nest from afar and applied an aerosol flusher directly into the nest.
Quick Knock Down
This application neutralizes the bald-faced hornets on contact.
Last Step
Once all the hornets were neutralized, we safely removed the nest and properly disposed of it.
