Photo Album: Birds Drive Homeowner in Colts Neck, NJ Cuckoo
We went out on a service call for a homeowner in Colts Neck, NJ who was having an issue with birds in his attic. As we began our inspection we noticed a severe issue with his roof — a huge gap known as a construction gap.
Noticed a Construction Gap
A construction gap is a space that is between the roof sheeting and the fascia board (the board that holds on the gutter). These gaps exist in homes that were built after 1970.
Wide Gap
The gap was so wide that we were able to stick our whole arm in it.
Found the Nesting Area
As we continued our inspection, we found an empty birds nest. Birds nesting in your attic aren't just annoying but are hazardous to your health.
What Birds Can Bring Into Your Home
Birds will bring a huge amount of debris to their intended nesting area riddled with parasites and create the perfect conditions for fungal attack. Nesting materials and feces are not only foul smelling but can also cause a secondary insect infestation.
Sanitize & Install a Leaf Proof Gutter Guard
We sanitized the nesting areas and then carefully removed the nests. Next, in order to prevent future bird and possible wildlife intrusions, we installed a leaf-proof gutter guard all along the roofline gap.
What is a Leaf Proof Gutter Guard?
A leaf proof gutter guard is made of an aluminum metal that slips under the bottom of the last shingle in between shingle and plywood and attaches to gutter with a small screw. This product still allows the water to run into the gutter but blocks and protects from birds and other animals from accessing the attic area.
