Recently, I went out on a service call in Freehold, NJ for a homeowner who was complaining of ants in her family room. Once I arrived and began a thorough inspection in the family room, I discovered ants trailing along the screen door. I took a closer look and identified these ants as pavement ants.
Pavement Ants Trailing Inside the Screen Door
I discovered pavement ants trailing along the inside of the screen door. Pavement ants are one of the more common house-infesting ants that we regularly deal with. They are about 1/8 of an inch long, dark brown to black in color, and got their name from their nesting location (under pavements like sidewalks and driveways).
Sliding Through the Deck
With ants, it is important to find the location of the nest and how they are gaining access into the home. As I followed their trail, I noticed that the ants were coming up through the tiny spaces on the deck.
Gaining Access Under the Deck
Continuing my inspection, I noticed the pavement ants were gaining access to the home through a tiny crack in the foundation.
Difficult to reach? Use the B-Pole!
The best course of action to treat this infestation was to apply a liquid application to the ant trail along the access point, near the screen door, and along the entire exterior of the home. Due to the fact the access point under the deck only had an 8-inch clearance, I had to think outside-the-box. I grabbed my B-pole, equipped the liquid application the end of it, and began treating under the deck area.
An Effective Treatment
With this type of treatment, the ants will come in contact with the product and unknowingly carry it back to their colony where they begin sharing the product with each other or what entomologists call "the transfer effect." How do they transfer the product? Ants regurgitate food to feed each other; they groom each other, and they even eat their dead. All of this activity rapidly spreads the product throughout the colony. It won't take long for the colony to be eliminated and for the home to be free of ants.
