Photo Album: Exterminators in Middletown Township, NJ
Recently, I went on a service call for one of our Home Protection Plan clients in Middletown, NJ who had noticed a large number of large ants crawling around the retaining wall in front of his house. As I began my inspection along the retaining wall I identified these ants as carpenter ants. Carpenter ants are wood-destroying insects and cause damage by excavating wood – burrowing into it to make room for their growing colony. While carpenter ants don’t cause as much structural damage as termites, if left untreated year after year, the carpenter ant damage can be extensive
Follow the Ant Trail
In order to find the colony, I needed to follow the ant trail. The ants that you see in your home are worker ants and their job is to find food and take it back to feed the queen. When they do find food, they'll leave a pheromone trail for other workers to follow. Tracking them on their trail is your ticket to finding the colony!
Found the Nest Over a 50 Yards Away
I eventually found the carpenter ants nest on a rotted tree log that was over a 50 yards from the home! Ant workers will travel up to 100 yards from a nest in search of food. Carpenter ants get into houses when they travel back and forth between their main nest and their satellite nests (the nests inside your home).
Carpenter Ants Are Serious Wood Destroyers
Carpenter ants are one of natures most aggressive wood destroyers. They get their name from their nest building, where they will excavate the wood and form smooth tunnels inside of the wood. Carpenter ants do not eat wood, they only tunnel and chew through wood to create nests. If they gain access to a home, they can pose a significant property threat.
Apply a Liquid Non-Repellent Application
The only long-term solution to a carpenter ant infestation problem is removing or destroying the nest. I applied liquid non-repellent application to the ant trail along the exterior of the building, the retaining wall and to the tree stump from which they were emerging.
What Does the Application Do?
When an ant comes into contact with this application, they will transport it back to their colony and share it with the others, including the queens. Within a short period of time, the entire colony is eliminated, and the ants in your home are no more! I will return to monitor the ant situation and apply any additional treatment as needed.
