Recently, I went out on a service call to one of our commercial clients, a restaurant in Colts Neck, NJ. The restaurant staff was complaining of drain flies in the prep room. The owner was frustrated that he had drain flies because he prided himself on having an A+ cleaning process in place. I assured the owner that unfortunately, even the best efforts sometimes leaves weak or critical points which can create an environment ideal for flies and that I will find that area and remove the drain flies.
Forgotten, Dirty Drain
As I began my inspection of the entire restaurant, I noticed that the drain flies were hovering around a particular locked cabinet near the prep area. Once the owner unlocked the cabinet I came across a healthy colony of drain flies harboring inside a dirty, forgotten drain.
Drain Flies LOVE Muck
As their name implies, drain flies are found inside house and storm drains. These flies, just like fruit flies, often feed off and lay their eggs in the accumulated "muck " that accumulates on drain surfaces. They often breed in kitchen sink drains that are coated with rotting food debris. Since this drain hasn't been properly sanitized in quite some time this created the perfect habitat for drain flies.
Let's Get Cleaning
Before applying any type of solution, I first removed all the debris and "muck" from the drain. It's not pretty, but it is an essential first step. Applying any solution first without first cleaning out the drain would be ineffective and a waste of product.
Muck Removed, Now Onto The Treatment
After I removed all of the drain fly breeding material, I sanitized the drain by applying a liquid application. This liquid application removes the bad bacteria from the drain. The bad bacteria is the breeding ground for the drain flies. By removing the bad bacteria we're eliminating the breeding habitat for the drain flies. Targeting the drain flies alone won't solve the problem. To rid the owner of drain flies, I must also eliminate the eggs and the larvae that are hiding in the gunk.
Next Step: Apply the Bio Foam
Next, I applied a bio-foam solution. This bio-foam solution effectively removes build-up, odors, and scum in kitchen drains, cracks, or crevices, to help prevent and get rid of existing drain flies and pests. This solution contains natural microbes, enzymes, and citrus oils, and works fast dissolving build-up and eliminating fly-attracting odors.
So Fresh and So Clean
Finally, I applied a fly bait product around the prep area to eliminate the mature, active drain flies.
I advised the owner to make sure that all drains are cleaned thoroughly on a regular basis, even ones that are no longer in use.
I scheduled a follow-up inspection with the owner to make sure that the drain flies are eliminated once and for all.
