Photo Album: Bed bugs on recliner in Ocean Township, NJ
Recently, I was called to an apartment unit in Ocean Township, NJ because of a suspected bed bug infestation. Although bed bugs can be found anywhere, they are especially a problem in high-density housing such as apartment buildings, nursing homes, and dormitories. The more people coming and going, the higher the likelihood of a bug hitchhiking its way inside.

Bed bugs are an insect that live as external parasites, using humans as hosts to feed off our blood. In fact, they live exclusively off blood and they have developed a preference for human blood. They feed while we are stationary, either sleeping or resting. Often, their bites trigger skin rashes and other allergic symptoms; however, not everyone has a visible reaction to their bites.

The inspection process is critical to identify where the bugs are located so the treatment can be targeted. Here, the tenant often slept on his recliner, so that's where I suspected the action was going on. These bugs do not venture far from their food source. Of course, with bed bugs, we always check the mattress, box spring, sofas, and any other upholstered furniture, as well as furnishings in the surrounding area, such as nite stands.

For treatment, we thoroughly vacuum the furniture, all cracks crevices, from top to bottom, and then follow with a liquid application that will eliminate any bed bugs still hiding and control their continued reproduction. We also apply a dust to any openings on the walls, baseboards, and electrical outlets.

These bugs will find the tightest hiding spots, and they'll even crawl through electrical plug outlets. These bugs are are one of the most persistent we deal with, and resolving bed bug infestations can be a challenge.

A thorough inspection can find hidden bed bugs.

After our first treatment, we always return for two separate follow-up visits to re-inspect and apply additional treatments as necessary. We stay on these bed bug jobs until the infestation is completely resolved and no one in the household is waking up with a new set of bed bug bites.
