This was a particularly challenging job in Brick, NJ for a commercial building infested by a raccoon that was trap shy. Trap shy animals are those that animals that have been caught previously or has a close encounter with a trap where they were able to escape because the trap was not properly set or it was not the right type of trap for that animal. Close calls can educate some critters — especially raccoons! Raccoons are highly intelligent animals, and they are notorious for becoming trap shy once they have had a previous trapping encounter. I’m proud to say that, while capturing a trap-shy raccoon can be a little tricker, I’ve always been able to catch the the wily little devils, no matter how cautious they may be.

To trap trap shy animals, you have to be extra careful about not contaminating them with scents that they are not familiar with, that your traps are properly sized and stabilized, and that you make it too tempting for them to pass up with attractive "lure" scents and bait. Also, whenever possible, you want to situate the traps in a way where they are forced to enter the trap - you don't give them a choice.

We gotcha! Using my years of experience as a trapper, I knew what would work and what wouldn't. This raccoon didn't stand a chance. He was caught on the first night of the set up and will be safely relocated far enough away from civilization to prevent returns.

Finally, I met with the building owner to discuss preventative measures to prevent future nuisance wildlife infestations. Often, infestations can be prevented through inspections and exclusion work. If you locate and seal potential access points before they are exploited by wildlife, you can stay a step ahead of them. And preventing an infestation is a whole lot easier than getting rid of one.
