Photo Album: Drain fly infestation removed in Dunellen, NJ
I was called upon to go to a commercial facility in Dunellen, NJ that was having a problem with drain flies in the basement. After inspecting the kitchen, bathrooms, and mechanical rooms, I found the source of the fly problem: Drain files, also known as moth flies, were breeding in a sump pump in one the mechanical rooms.

The key to treating drain flies is to remove their organic breeding material. You won't have drain flies with clean drains that are free of accumulated organic matter.

I removed part of sump pump cover to look down to get a better understanding of what i was dealing with. It was not a pretty sight! There were layers of built-up "gunk" and sediment inside the sump. These flies feed on organic matter and sewage. They breed in decomposing organic materials with the drain fly larvae in the gelatinous slime that coats drains. Surprisingly, considering the filth where they breed and the filth that they eat, they do not transmit any human diseases. Nevertheless, these flies with their long hairs are inherently disgusting and a major nuisance, and no one wants these tiny winged bugs flying out of drains in your kitchen, bathroom, or even basement sump pump! Any drain in a home or commercial building coated with decomposing organic gunk, is a potential needing ground for these insects.
Removed the cover for closer inspection for drain flies.
I treated the sump pit with bio-gel and bio-foam products that uses enzymes to dissolve remove breeding material. I recommended that the sump pit should be flushed with hot soapy water every month to keep it cleaner. When it comes to breeding, drain flies don't want clean, they want the scummiest, dirtiest drains that they can find!
