Photo Album: Tricky raccoons rip apart louvres to get into warm home - Nuisance wildlife removal in Belford, NJ
A Belford homeowner contacted Little Rascals By Cowleys after seeing a raccoon on his roof entering the attic. As we get deeper into fall, approaching winter, the weather is starting to have that cold bite to it, especially as evening temperatures drop. Not only do we feel it, but a variety of nuisance wildlife does as well, including raccoons. Seeking shelter from the harsh outdoor elements, raccoons look for warm cozy spaces to nest, and they have a special affinity for attics.
Wildlife point of entry in Belford, New Jersey
The raccoon made himself at home, building his own private entranceway by ripping apart the dried, old attic vent louvers with his powerful, sharp claws. Since this was an active infestation, it was important to resolve this infestation quickly before there was any significant property damage to the home. Raccoons will shred through insulation, chew and scratch wood, and leave their filthy disease-carrying waste on everything. Also, raccoons are the major rabies vector in New Jersey. Although we think of raccoons as "cute" with their burglar-mask faces, they are actually aggressive, territorial animals, especially a mom perceiving someone as a threat to her babies. If you happen to get bitten by one of these animals, it is a serious matter.
Traps set on roof for Raccoons in Belford
I placed two traps on the roof baited with my favorite secret recipe coon bait that they simply can't resist. Even though the homeowner reported seeing only one raccoon, where there is one, there may be many. So, I placed two traps on the roof just to be safe.
One way exclusion trap for Raccoons
I also placed a one-way way exclusion over the entire access. This flap will allow any animals out, but it's a one-way trip. Any wildlife is unable to get back in.
Traps on roof and one way trap in Belford, NJ
With this trap/exclusion set-up, I'm confident that I'll trap and evict these trespassers in a few days at most. Once caught, they'll be safely relocated to an area far away from human habitats where they can live out their remaining raccoon days in peace. I'll then pull the traps, remove the exclusion, and place a temporary patch over the access to complete the job. This patch will keep out any nuisance wildlife like raccoons and squirrels until the homeowner is able to have the louvers permanently replaced.
