Photo Album: Wildlife removal and control in Navesink, NJ
After we had successfully trapped numerous squirrels that had invaded a horse stable in Navesink, the owner asked Cowleys to sanitize and deodorize the barn’s attic space above the tack room. There were noxious odors coming from this area, and even though this was a barn, the smells were well beyond the usual smells one would expect in a barn.

Toxic mess from rodents in Navesink, New Jersey
The owner was under the impression that the recently trapped squirrels had been living up there. When I inspected it, it turned out that the squirrels were only part of the problem - and it was much, much more. The area was a laboratory of virtually every nuisance wildlife fecal dropping. There was not only squirrel droppings, there were also droppings from raccoons, mice, rats, and opossums. Wildlife technicians are able to identify the type of wildlife based on animal tracks and the shape of the droppings - and this was a textbook example of everything in one place! According to the owner, things got so bad because this area of the barn was virtually ignored for about two years. There is no other way to say it - the area was a dangerous toxic mess of droppings and posed a significant health hazard. When wildlife droppings dry, its spores are released in the air, and in an enclosed space, when breathed in, can cause a variety of chronic respiratory infections.
Tools of the trade for rodent clean up in Navesink
It was time to take care of this toxic mess. I geared up with a head lamp, a respirator, and rubber gloves for protection, and then used a HEPA vacuum, and Steri-fab sanitizing solution to thoroughly clean the area. After this cleaning, I used a power mister to saturate the entire area with the Steri-fab solution and sterilize every nook and cranny. Wildlife infestations inevitably leave a lot of damage. It's not just the animals that cause damage, but their toxic waste left behind. Nevertheless, it s unusual to find this level of the aftermath of a wildlife infestation where so many different animals had invaded the same space.
Clean and safe attic
I took photos and showed them to the owner who did not realize the extent of the problem. She was very impressed and pleased that the barn was now free of the remnants of a wildlife infestation. The pungent aroma of decaying animal waste was gone and this area no longer posed a health hazard.
