Photo Album: Bald faced hornets nest in Iselin, NJ
While conducting a property inspection on a routine home protection plan service for a homeowner in Iselin, I came across a baldfaced hornet nest in a tree right in the customer’s front yard. Baldfaced hornets are large yellow jackets that build aerial nests at least a few feet off the ground. They get their name from their distinctive ivory-white markings on their face.

I alerted the customer of the nest. I was somewhat surprised that the homeowner was unaware of the wasp nest, and was glad that I happened to be out there to locate this nest. The nest was too close for comfort to the home, and I wanted to treat and remove the nest to avoid any potential problems if the nest is inadvertently disturbed. These stinging insects, like their yellow jacket relatives, can be highly aggressive. They will attack anyone or anything that invades their space. Aggravating the colony can send hundreds of angry wasps right in your direction. One sting is painful; multiple stings are downright excruciating. And if you have a sensitivity to their venom, these stings are potentially life-threatening.
Removal of hornets nest in Iselin, NJ
Removal of baldfaced hornet nests can be challenging because of the risk of stings. In order to remove the nest, I first applied pyrethrin dust into the main opening to ensure that any hornets inside the hive were quickly knocked down. I followed up with a foam application to the nest to eliminate any hornets still remaining. Once there was no longer any observable wasp activity, I began removal of the nest. Nothing is easy! This particular nest was built wrapped around several small branches. I thought that I may have to cut away some branches to remove the nest, but realized that if I slowly unravel the nest from the branches it wouldn't be necessary for me to cut away any tree branches.
