Photo Album: Metuchen Wasp Nest Removal and Control
A day care center reported that flying insects were bothering customers and staff coming in and out of their facility. At the time I was dispatched, I was not sure if this infestation involved stinging insects, but I did know that there were little children around, and that was enough. I needed to get there immediately to take care of any pest problem. The customer was not sure of they type of flying insects hovering around the the entrance. All she could say was that they were a dark, brown and reddish color. Fortunately, if these were stinging insects, no one had yet been been stung.

Upon arrival, I asked the customer a few questions to get a better idea of the problem - where the insects have been seen, how long has there been insect activity, and whether the insects were aggressive. I was told that flying insects were seen hovering around the entrance way starting this morning, and while no one was stung, these insects seemed aggressive and agitated whenever people were around. Everything I heard pointed to a wasp infestation. Based on the customer information, I knew exactly where to start. I began by inspecting the building's exterior near the entrance. It only took a few seconds for me locate the nest and identify these wasps as paper wasps. This was one job that did not require a lot of detective work.
Paper wasps after treatment in Metuchen, New Jersey
I explained to the customer that paper wasps will usually sting only when their nest is threatened. These wasps seemed aggressive because of location. Out of all the places to build a nest, they decided to build their hive right over top the main entrance door to the building. The wasps made a bad choice. The wasps and their nest needed to be removed immediately.
I first treated the nest with an aerosol to immediately knock down the insect population. I gave the time for the treatment to work, and once I saw that there was no more activity, I carefully removed and packaged the nest to be transported with me once I leave. I then treated the surrounding area with an liquid application as a back-up to kill any straggling wasps that managed to escape the initial treatment. Now, with these aggressive unruly trespassers removed, the day care center could now go about its business without worrying whether the kids at the center, their parents, or any staff would be the recipients of a few painful wasp stings. The day care center was appreciative that I arrived so quickly and was able to immediately resolve their wasp infestation. I told them that I was not about to let any small children be stung by wasps on my watch!
