Keep Stink Bugs Out of Your Home - Image 1

If you think that you have seen a huge increase in the number of stink bugs since you were a kid, you are exactly right. In fact, it is commonly accepted that stink bugs did not even make it to North America until 2001. In under twenty five years these bugs have gone from never being seen to being a huge nuisance all across the state of New Jersey, and if you are a farmer, they are more than a nuisance, they are a serious agricultural pest. This invasive species can now be found all across our state. It is important to know a little bit about this pest and even more important to know how to keep them out of your home.

So what are stink bugs? Scientifically, these bugs are known as Halyomorpha halys. Their full common name is the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug. The term "marmorated" in their name refers to the marble-like brown mottled coloration on their backs. If you have ever come in contact with a stink bug then you know exactly why they are referred to as stink bugs. When crushed, these bugs give off an offensive odor that is often times likened to cilantro, sulfur, ammonia, rancid meat, or a skunk.
Stink bugs are first thought to have made it to the United States in a shipment from Asia going into Allentown, PA. By 2002 they were found in both Northern and Central New Jersey. They are able to survive well outside in our area during the warmer months, but as the weather gets cooler they look for shelter. They are often found inside of wall voids, attics, flooring, and other hidden areas of the home. Once they have found a way inside your home, stink bugs are very difficult to control. The best strategy when it comes to stink bugs is prevention.

There are a number of steps you can take to reduce the number of stink bugs in your home. Luckily, many of these suggestions will also deter other pests like ants and mice. First, make sure to keep your landscaping well-trimmed. Shrubbery and branches are best kept at least two feet from your home. Next, keep light emanating from your home at a minimum because stink bugs are attracted to light. You can do this by turning off your porch light except when you need it. It is also a good idea to pull down window blinds during the evening. Light can attract stink bugs to your windows, which bring us to the next suggestion, replace and repair damaged screens on doors and windows. Also, using caulk around your windows helps to keep bugs out. Believe it or not, you could actually bring stink bugs into your home. Check packages, grocery bags, and other items as soon as they come into your home.
