Drain Flies Roaming Throughout the Kitchen in Princeton, NJ

Challenge

We were called out to a commercial building in Princeton, NJ to handle a fly issue. Upon inspection, we identified these flying insects as drain flies. Drain flies, sometimes called sewer flies, are small, dark-winged, non-biting gnats. The key identifying trait for this fly is the unique pattern of veins in its wings. Their wings are covered with scales so they disappear in a cloud of fine dust when swatted or mashed.

We also noticed that almost every floor drain had a buildup of discarded foods and liquids and looked like they haven't been cleaned in quite some time. Drain flies enjoy stagnant water that collects even small amounts of bacteria and sewage and can lay eggs in the film that forms on the inside of pipes and drains when water pools and collects sewage. We informed the owner about the sanitation issues and he and his crew immediately began thoroughly cleaning the area.

Solution

Once they finished cleaning, we scrubbed out all the drains in the area and then treated them with a liquid product that removes the bad bacteria, which is the breeding ground for the drain flies. Afterward, we treated the drains with a bio-foam solution that eliminates all fly-attracting odors. Lastly, we applied a fly bait product around the high infestation areas to eliminate the active drain flies.
