Recently, I was sent out to a homeowner in New Brunswick, NJ whose children were playing outside when they disturbed a hornet's nest. The kids were playing with a frisbee when it inadvertently hit the branch the huge hornet's nest was attached to. Fortunately, none of the kids were stung and the mother called Cowleys for help. Since I know I'm going to be dealing with stinging insects, I need to equip my protective bee suit. This suit is designed to protect me from getting stung by those pesky little buggers. I began inspecting the backyard when I came across the hornet's nest in a tree. Upon closer inspection, I identified these insects as bald-faced hornets. Bald-faced hornets received their clever name from their mainly white face and black body. Although referred to as a hornet they are actually part of the wasp family, hence their nickname bull wasp. These stinging insects actually sense vibrations through the air and are extremely territorial and will aggressively sting anything that comes close to or disturbs their nest. They are known for making large, enclosed paper nests that generally consists of a small entrance hole usually near the bottom. In order to treat the nest from a safe distance, I utilized my extendable pole and equipped an aerosol application to it. The aerosol application immediately eliminates the bald-faced hornets on contact. I placed the application right into the entranceway of the nest and began fogging. The hornets then began to fall to their doom. Once they were eliminated I removed the nest and the branch it was attached to and properly disposed of them.
